OEDAŞ has increased the system security of all our substations

MORE INNOVATION IN THE TURKISH ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION INDUSTRY FROM OEDAŞ:

SCADA SYSTEM AND TRANSFORMERS ARE PROTECTED WITH SCADAFENCE

Anatolia, Turkey – December 23, 2022 – OEDAŞ has introduced the SCADAfence Platform, the global leader for operational technology (OT) and internet of things (IoT) cyber security, as part of its investments in technology upgrades. The SCADAfence Platform was installed in 54 substations that gather data from hundreds of transformers across OEDAŞ’s service region, and is used in conjunction with OEDAŞ’s SCADA center. OEDAŞ Director Muzaffer Yalçın said, “While taking system security a step further with SCADAfence, which is being deployed for the first time in Turkish electricity distribution facilities, we are monitoring traffic between devices and analyzing data. In this way, we have taken our efforts to provide a safe and sustainable electricity supply a step further.”

Osmangazi Elektrik Dağıtım AŞ (OEDAŞ), which provides electricity distribution services to the provinces of Afyonkarahisar, Bilecik, Eskişehir, Kütahya, and Uşak is working to improve service quality through digitalization while also investing in infrastructure throughout their network, as part of their 2022 investments. As part of this, the company has introduced the use of the SCADAfence Platform, the global leader in the protection of operational technology (OT) and internet of things (IoT) cybersecurity.  SCADAfence devices were installed in 54 transformer centers, which gather data from hundreds of transformers across the company’s service region, and are used in conjunction with OEDAŞ’s SCADA (Centralized Monitoring Control and Data Collection System) center. These devices increase system security as well as communication between all systems used from the central station to smaller substations, enabling faster intervention in the event of a fault.

Muzaffer Yalçın: “While increasing cyber security, we are also shortening our response time to failures.”

OEDAŞ Director Muzaffer Yalçın provided additional information about the SCADA center and the new SCADAfence cybersecurity systems. Affirming that they have have made a positive impact on the lives of the 3 million people in the regions they serve,  Yalçın said,“We are increasing our technological competence as well as our network investments in order to meet the ever-increasing energy demand in our region, as in the world and in our country, in a safe and sustainable way. In 2022, we established our SCADA center, which enables us to remotely monitor and store data for all systems, and intervene remotely in our networks. Thanks to this system that allows us to control the entire region, we have also significantly reduced the intervention time for faults. Now we have installed the SCADAfence platform in our SCADA center and 54 substations that gather data from hundreds of transformers spread throughout the region. This platform takes OT and IoT device security to the next level with remote access. We are happy to break new ground in our sector at a time when various studies are underway within the scope of the National Cybersecurity Strategy and Action Plans, including in the energy sector.”

Stating that the SCADAfence platform increases the communication between devices and raises the security level, Yalçın added, “The platform ensures that all data is processed quickly, despite the high traffic between these devices. This allows the company to increase its preventive maintenance services and shorten the time it takes to respond to failures.”
